Is It Safe To Use TikTok? We Enlisted The Help Of Three Security Experts To Find Out.

Many parents have a lot of issues with TikTok, which has become one of the fastest-growing social media platforms in recent years.

In order to help alleviate concerns about the social media platform, we spoke with three experts on social media and security to find out how safe users are on the platform and how they can better safeguard themselves.

What Exactly Is TikTok?

TikTok is a video-sharing social media site launched in 2016 and has been downloaded over two billion times, with over 600 million users as of this year.

It was the most downloaded app in the world in 2016.

TikTok is also significantly more popular among younger generations, with 62 percent of TikTok users in the United States alone being between the ages of 10 and 29, which isn’t surprising given that the app is designed specifically for those under the age of 18.

What Are The Significant Dangers?

The video-sharing app TikTok has gained widespread attention in recent months.

While it can be a safe way to post content and engage with videos when downloading and using the platform, there are also risks to be aware of, according to Antony Demetriades, vice president at McAfee.

According to the report, “popular TikTok users have a larger digital footprint, increasing their risk of becoming a victim of phishing attacks.”

High-profile users can be targeted by criminals, who can then impersonate their accounts in order to send fraudulent messages to other users.

The company has created “a detailed series of community guidelines that are designed to outline what is and is not allowed or acceptable on the platform,” says Demetriades.

“As a result, TikTok has created a detailed series of community guidelines that outline what is and is not acceptable on the platform.”

One example of a phishing attack is when someone sends a fraudulent message with the intent of tricking or baiting the recipient into clicking on a potentially dangerous link or disclosing sensitive information about themselves and their company.

“TikTok carries so many of the same risks as other social media platforms such as Instagram and Snapchat,” writes the author.

As Paul Bischoff, Editor of Comparitech points out, “TikTok collects personally identifiable information about its users for advertising purposes.”

“Scraping is a method by which third parties can obtain that information. A Chinese corporation controls TikTok.

If your work is for the federal government or is required to protect trade secrets, you should probably avoid using TikTok, even though there is no evidence that the Chinese government is spying on you.”

Do Hackers Target TikTok, And Are There Any Specific Attacks They Use?

“We don’t believe TikTok is being targeted any more aggressively than any other social media platform.”

Users’ data will be harvested, and hackers will distribute phishing links, but this is true of pretty much all social media platforms, according to Tom Gaffney, a security consultant at F-Secure, who spoke to Trusted Reviews.

Because TikTok is a video-sharing platform, it places less emphasis on direct messaging than social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter.

Furthermore, direct messages can only be sent and received by users who are 16 years old or older on TikTok.

“The majority of TikTok attacks are carried out through social engineering, rather than by exploiting the app’s security.”

Attackers use scams and phishing to defraud users of their money and passwords.

Although any security vulnerability in TikTok would be patched as soon as it was discovered, “phishing and scams aren’t going away,” says Bischoff, who also emphasizes the dangers of phishing attacks.

Would You Allow Your Children To Use It?

The professor went on to say that “during the pandemic specifically, children have become extremely reliant on technology to engage with friends and family virtually.”

When the pandemic began in early 2020, TikTok quickly gained popularity among children, leading to the app being used by over 1 billion people worldwide.

Children are becoming increasingly connected to the internet due to this increase in online connectivity, which increases the risk of them engaging with harmful content across platforms and unknowingly disclosing personal information.

“In the same way that it is important to monitor children when they are using technology that is connected to the internet, it is also important to begin having conversations with children about potential online dangers at an early age.

“This will provide children with the knowledge and skills they need to stay safe when using the internet.”

“It is recommended that parents and guardians regularly check to see what apps and services their children are using, as well as to invest in mobile security solutions,” Demetriades explained.

The minimum age to sign up for TikTok is thirteen years old. Anyone under the age of thirteen will be placed in the Younger Users version of the app, which has additional privacy and safety safeguards in place.

TikTok, on the other hand, does not verify the age of its users, so children as young as 13 could still sign up.

“I have a 12-year-old, and that is absolutely not the case. It’s also in possession of a 15-year-old, whom I allow to use it,” Gaffney revealed.

“All of her peers use it, and denying her access to it would exacerbate the ‘fear of missing out.'”

However, we have discussions about how she uses it and the content that she consumes.

“It’s true that TikTok contains a certain amount of objectionable content.

Gaffney continued, “However, the same is true of YouTube; it’s just that as a newer platform, TikTok has had some difficulties putting its defences in place.

What Kind Of Information Does TikTok Collect?

“A great deal. The country has a challenge when it comes to privacy.

General user agreements are ambiguous, and some good studies have demonstrated that Facebook’s data collection exceeds that of even other social media companies,” Gaddney claims.

It will profile your device (phone) and other accounts you access (though it will not collect your login information) if you are logged in to TikTok.

When you sign up for a TikTok account, the app will ask you for personal information in order to set up your account. You mustn’t share this information with anyone else on the site.

Here’s what Bischoff considers to be the most important information: email address, phone number, age; profile image and information; the content you post; payment information; contact lists;

IP address; advertising IDs; app and file names; keystroke patterns; location; biometric identifiers (face and voice prints); messages; uploaded content metadata; cookies and web beacons.

What Methods Are Most Effective For Users To Safeguard Themselves?

If you receive an unsolicited message, do not respond to it or click on any links or attachments in it.

“Make your online footprint as small as possible by including as little personal information as possible in your profile and posts,” says the author. Bischoff recommends the following:

“Don’t use your real name,” says the author. Reject any permissions that aren’t necessary, such as access to your location, contact lists, keyboard, and clipboard.

If you need to send private messages, you should use a messaging app that offers end-to-end encryption, such as WhatsApp, Telegram, or Signal.”

Unlike some other apps, TikTok does not provide end-to-end encryption, making it less secure for users to send private or personal direct messages.

Gaffney advises users to avoid clicking on links from unknown users and block posts from accounts they do not recognize.

In the case of children, TiTtok provides several tools to assist parents in limiting their children’s exposure to the content.

Using the “pairing feature,” which allows parents to have more granular control over their children, parents can ensure that their children are using the appropriate age settings on the app.
