Samsung Galaxy S21 FE review: Great phone, but it’s a little late.

After months of anticipation, the Galaxy S21 FE has finally arrived in our hands, and I’ve had the privilege to put it through its paces for the past week or so.

So much has been said about how the Galaxy S21 FE is overpriced and too close to the Galaxy S22 collection to be considered. When the S21 FE first launched in early January, I agreed with these arguments.

However, after using it as my primary system and after pricing for many markets has been revealed, has the S21 FE managed to persuade me otherwise?

Quickly, let’s not waste any more time and get right down to answering that question on this Galaxy S21 FE evaluation.

In fact, I’ll do you a favour and inform you that the Galaxy S21 and Galaxy S21+ (and, on the other hand, the S20, S20+ and S20 FE) are remarkably similar to one another (and to their predecessors,

as the S21 and S21+ did not introduce any significant upgrades over their predecessors), so you would be forgiven for skipping straight to the conclusion. On the other hand, if you require all of the fine print, continue reading.

Design and show.

The design style of the Galaxy S21 FE is similar to that of its more expensive siblings, and aside from the larger display, it is very similar to the Galaxy S21 on the lower end of the price spectrum.

The show’s front is protected by Gorilla Glass Victus, while the back is made of plastic (making it an excellent grip compared to glass and preventing finger marks).

However, in contrast to the Galaxy S21, S21+, and S21 Extremely, the rear camera island is not connected to the phone’s metallic body.

It simply protrudes from the sting of the back panel, making it a scaled-down version of the design style that we fell in love with when the S21 collection first debuted in early 2022.

Samsung has made the Galaxy S21 FE even thinner than the Galaxy S20 FE, which was previously the thinnest smartphone on the market.

When it comes to thickness, the S21 FE is now the same thickness as the standard Galaxy S21 (there is no headphone jack, in case you were wondering),

though the difference isn’t that noticeable because the Galaxy S20 FE was only 0.5mm thicker in the first place. The S21 FE is also significantly lighter, making it feel even more tangible in everyday use.

Apart from this, one other way in which the Galaxy S21 FE has been improved over its predecessor is by eliminating the shiny border that runs across the digicam punch gap within the display.

The punch gap area hasn’t shrunk – there’s still a black circle around the digicam that takes up more space than you need it to – but at the very least, your eyes will no longer dart to the highest of the display screen every time light hits the punch gap.

In addition to a large punch gap space larger than the ultimate, the Galaxy S21 FE has a fantastic AMOLED display, which you would expect from any Samsung flagship.

This panel measures (flat) 6.4 inches in size, making it the perfect size for one-handed use and content consumption while on the go. A 120Hz refresh rate is also included.

In contrast, it is not an adaptive refresh rate (meaning that it stays at 120Hz all of the time); you will nonetheless get smooth and simple scrolling expertise, as well as animated transitions and transitions between scenes.

The bezels on all display angles are relatively thin, though the bottom bezel isn’t quite as small as the Galaxy S21 or S21+.

The in-display optical fingerprint sensor is surprisingly accurate and quick, and I prefer it to the ultrasonic selection found on Samsung’s non-FE flagships.

Naturally, Samsung also provides you with the option of using facial recognition to unlock your device for even greater convenience, and it generally works quite well most of the time.

Unfortunately, Samsung’s cost-cutting efforts will be intensified even further in the coming year. The Galaxy S21 FE does not come with a display protector installed out of the box, at least not in India or the United Kingdom, which is where we obtained our test units.

Furthermore, as we previously mentioned, there is no charger or earphones included in the box. The new USB-C cable, SIM ejection pin, and the short start information are the only things included.

Cameras on the Galaxy S21 FE

I would not go into great detail about the S21 FE cameras because they’re identical to those found in the Galaxy S20 and S20+, which I would not talk much about because they’re identical to those in the Galaxy S20 and S20+.

The reason for this is that the S21 FE’s camera expertise combines what you’d get if you purchased all of the models discussed earlier in this article.

Although there is no 8K video recording capability on this phone, the rest of the camera app’s functionality has been copied from the Galaxy S21 collection, including modes such as Director’s View. In addition, the picture’s high quality is similar to that of these telephones.

The primary camera produces excellent images in all lighting conditions, whereas the ultra-wide-angle and zoom cameras produce excellent images primarily during the day.

On the other hand, selfies are slightly lacking in detail regardless of the time of day or the environment in which you’re photographing them, but they have low noise levels.

For more information on what you can expect from the digicam expertise on the S21 FE, I recommend that you read our Galaxy S20 FE review and our Galaxy S21 review for more information.

Efficiency

We’ve tested both the Snapdragon 888 and the Exynos 2100 variants of the Galaxy S21 FE, and we’ve found no significant difference in performance between the two.

The S21 FE, like the other members of the Galaxy S21 trio, is capable of dealing with anything you throw at it without breaking a sweat.

Apart from the camera app, where taking pictures repeatedly can occasionally be a stutter-filled experience for whatever reason, everything works perfectly.

Nevertheless, this is most likely due to a lack of optimization, which can be easily remedied by installing new software.

Even though we haven’t been able to compare gaming performance side-by-side, each of our gadgets performed admirably in essentially the most demanding video games, with none of them becoming excessively hot to the touch even after prolonged periods of gameplay.

Overall, the Galaxy S21 FE is an extremely responsive smartphone that competes favourably with the other S21 models in terms of speed and battery life.

Unfortunately, it is also neck-and-neck with them when it comes to not having any additional expandable storage.

When it comes to storage, the Galaxy S21 FE is lacking, and if you want as much onboard storage as possible, you’ll have to shell out an additional $70 for the 256GB model.

This is the main reason why the Galaxy S21 FE feels overpriced, even though it has the same starting price as its predecessor did.

The software program

The Galaxy S21 FE is the first phone in Samsung’s lineup to ship with One UI 4.0 and Android 12 out of the box, making it groundbreaking.

It was originally scheduled to return with Android 11, but due to how the phone was delayed, you’re getting the most recent version of the operating system instead.

Due to improvements in Samsung’s coverage, the Galaxy S21 FE will in the future be upgraded to Android 15, allowing it to compete with the Galaxy S22 collection rather than the Galaxy S21 collection in terms of software program support.

It comes pre-loaded with all of the features of Samsung’s One UI 4.0 (as seen in the video below), as well as virtually every feature found on current Galaxy flagships, including support for Samsung DeX.

And on the other hand, it appears that Samsung has made a few minor enhancements to One UI 4.0 that aren’t apparent on the previously updated gadgets to Android 12 via a software program replacement.

I noticed numbered (0 being the lowest and 150 being the highest), but there could also be a couple of others that we’ll report on as we come across them.

High-definition audio.

The stereo speaker setup on the Galaxy S21 FE is the same as that found on other Samsung flagship smartphones.

There’s a dedicated speaker on the back of the phone, with the earpiece serving as a second speaker, as well as Dolby Atmos support.

Likewise, the audio quality is comparable, though the non-FE Galaxy S21 models have a little more bass and depth, making the superior Avengers theme song during the final battle of Avengers: Endgame a little bit more enjoyable.

No differences will be apparent until you compare the devices side by side, but I would have preferred to see the same configuration on all four models.

Battery life is measured in hours.

The Galaxy S21 FE has a 4,500 mAh battery, the same as that found in the Galaxy S20 FE and Galaxy S20+.

Because the S21 FE — even with the Exynos 2100 variant — will last you all day and then some with 120Hz mode enabled (at the very least until you’re gaming for several hours) and performs significantly higher than the S21+ with its 4,800 mAh battery, Samsung should have performed some crazy optimization here.

Notably, my Galaxy S21+, powered by an Exynos 2100 processor, did not last nearly as long as the S21 FE. The S21+, on the other hand, has a significantly larger display (6.7 inches).

However, the decision remains the same. The S21+ has an adaptive refresh rate, which may help conserve battery life when 120Hz mode is enabled instead of the Galaxy S21 FE’s fixed 120Hz refresh rate, indicating that there is something else at play here.

In any case, the Galaxy S21 FE — regardless of whether you opt for the Exynos or Snapdragon variant — offers incredible battery life.

Charging can be accomplished in a short period if you have a 25W charger or plan to purchase one.

One hundred per cent charging took approximately 75 minutes, whereas 10 minutes and a half-hour of charging increased the battery’s capacity by as much as 21 per cent and 56 per cent, respectively.

In addition, 15W wi-fi charging and 4.5W reverse wi-fi charging (for charging a variety of devices) are both supported.

Verdict

Initially, I thought it would be difficult to conclude the Galaxy S21 FE. However, I was wrong. However, as I got closer to the end of this assessment, I realized that it was fairly simple.

Given how late the Galaxy S21 FE is arriving, it may be preferable to attend and see what the Galaxy S22 lineup has to offer, rather than waiting for price cuts on the S21 FE when the S22 lineup does arrive.

For those who want to purchase a brand new flagship phone right now that is less expensive than the S21 and S21+ while still providing you with many of the same options; we recommend that you go with the S21 FE.

It is available in both black and white. Even though removing the microSD slot and the inclusion of in-box equipment may be a source of frustration for some, it is still an incredible value for the money, and you will not be sorry that you purchased it.
